Why choose this tour

This is the ultimate African scuba safari holiday, and this adrenaline-filled tour is the best way to discover these amazing countries, it's wildlife, and the best dive sites of South Africa and Mozambique.

Admire the most diverse and breathtaking landscapes in the world: from dry savannahs, to subtropical forests, and spectacular stretches of rugged coastline around Cape Town where we will climb South Africa's iconic Table Mountain.

Discover 2 totally different underwater worlds: the cool Atlantic Ocean with its mysterious kelp forests, shipwrecks, great white sharks and large numbers of whales. And the warm waters of the Indian Ocean in Mozambique, where we relax on tropical white beaches, snorkel with giant whale sharks and dive with giant mantas.

Take your bucket list to another level on this one-of-a-kind trip to one of the wildest spots on the planet.

We'll also visit 2 of the favorite dive sites by Jacques Cousteau: the famous Sodwana Bay and Aliwal Shoal, where you can dive with sharks without a cage, such as: tiger sharks, ragged tooth sharks, blacktip and whitetip sharks.

Experience the unbelievable rush of your first safari. Big chance that you'll be able to spot the Big Five as we visit 3 different parks. Highlights are: an exciting rhino walk in Swaziland, camping in the Kruger Park where you can hear the lions roar at night from your tent, and the Addo Elephant Park, where can get face-to-face with herds of elephants.

“ I found the trip very enjoyable. Reception at the airport was perfect on arrival. Immediately felt 'safe'. It's only a pity that we could not explore the Drakensberg. I truly enjoyed everything! Honestly! Thank you for showing me another side of South Africa. I swam with sharks, relaxed, and saw a lot. ”

Eva Asdou

“ We really enjoyed ourselves! The packing list is super handy! You were always there to answer questions. Favourite accommodation was in Swaziland! Amazing to hear the animal sounds at night! We would’ve loved to see more of the Panorama Route though. ”

Menno & Gudi

“ Very nice and worth it. ”

anita beernink

“ I truly enjoyed this trip and wouldn’t want to have missed all the experiences. Some activities you could not do if you were diving that day, which is a pity. I would’ve preferred if the meals were a bit healthier, but I am glad that my feedback was dealt with during the trip. Besides these comments, it was perfect. ”

Marloes van Diffelen

“ We were well taken care of. Always felt very safe, great that you were part of the group as the guides. 2 days per dive destination was perfect. The second day at Kruger went a little quick because we had to be in the next location in time, which was a pity. Frequent stopping during the journey to stretch our legs was nice. Good price / quality. One of the best vacations we’ve ever had! ”

Gido & Marijn

“ The trip felt like we saw all the secret tips of a local South African. A great mix of locations and activities! Good variety of camping and staying at lodges, spending 3 - 2 days at each dive site is an excellent rhythm, but the weather must cooperate to get the most out of the dive trip. ”

When Is the Best Time to travel to Southern Africa?

A trip throughout South Africa, Mozambique and Swaziland is possible all year round due to its pleasant and mild climate. Only Cape Town and surroundings are best avoided in winter (our summer); it is then relatively cool (14°C) and it rains regularly.

In Johannesburg, the average is 27°C in summer (our winter). In winter the daytime average is 17°C, but after sunset it can can be quite cold (4°C).

Southern Mozambique has a subtropical climate, even in the coldest months it's still a pleasant 25°C during daytime. In January this can go up to 32°C. From October to March it's the rainy season, when sometimes short showers occur. But it hardly ever rains prolonged, and it always clears up quickly again.

Diving in Southern Africa

All our tours are suitable for seasoned and beginner divers. You'll experience the most fascinating and diverse underwater adventures.

The dive sites vary from the southernmost tropical coral reefs of the world in Sodwana Bay and Mozambique; which are home of the healthiest megafauna such as manta rays and whale sharks, to the rocky shores of Cape Town and Hermanus where you can dive with sharks: with or without a cage in beautiful mysterious kelp forests, and where humpback whales can be admired from the waterfront.

Additionally there are also many rare animals to see in Southern Africa, such as the Coelacanth and the Dugong, and if you are lucky you may see schools of hammerhead sharks and the Sardine Run. Add to that the large number of shipwrecks scattered along the entire coast and you have the perfect diving holiday!

The diving itself is generally a more physical challenge than, say, the Dutch Antilles. In Southern Africa, almost every dive starts with pushing the RIB through the surf with the help of the crew, and there is often a moderate to strong current, so a fairly good condition is desirable if you want get the maximum enjoyment from your dives.

In terms of underwater temperatures you can expect the following:
  • Mozambique - Visibility ranges from 10 - 30 m, with water temperatures between 23 - 28°C.
  • Sodwana Bay - Visibility is rarely less than 15 m, with water temperatures between 19 - 24°C.
  • Aliwal Shoal - Visibility ranges from 10 - 25 m, with a water temperature between 17 - 23°C.
  • Hermanus & Cape Town - Visibility is on average 6m, with water temperatures between 9 - 18°C.

Travelling with a group

Our tours are suitable for both seasoned and beginner divers who like going on an active and adventurous holiday. Our groups usually consist of 10 to 18 people, and the average age is between 20 and 30 years. It is also a really fun way to meet new people, after all, you are traveling with like-minded people who have the same interests as you. Within a couple of hours you will feel completely at ease, and perhaps make friends for life!

On all our tours, there is also more than enough time for yourself, so you also have the ability to do the things that you like and you're not attached to the group 24/7.

When you're traveling in a group, you can fully enjoy your holiday and the country. The tour guides will provide you with lots of information about the places you're travelling through, and you don't have to worry about things like transportation, sleeping, eating, what you want to do, finding information about the places you visit, finding good dive centers, etc. This is all arranged for you by your tour guides.

And traveling with a group is more economical than travelling on your own, because you share the cost of accommodation and food, and you can also take advantage of the many group discounts for activities.

Is Southern Africa Safe?

Southern Africa has unjustly garnered a negative reputation when it comes to safety, and that is not exactly right because the local population consists largely of very friendly and hospitable people.

Of course there is more crime than in most western parts of the world, but the ratio between rich and poor is also larger here, do not forget that we are immensely rich in the eyes of Africans - and if you flaunt an expensive camera, mobile phone or expensive jewellery then the temptation is sometimes too much. This kind of theft is easily prevented by properly storing your valuables and watching your bag.

On a group tour, there is generally less risk because you are with other people, and if you follow the advice of your tour guides, you absolutely don't need to worry.

There is also a safe on our overland truck where you can store valuables and passports.

Book this as a private guided tour?

Would you like to go on this dive safari with your own diving club, friends or family? This is possible! As long as the group consists of at least 8 people. Please contact us for the possibilities.

What should I pack?

It is possible to bring along 1 backpack, 1 bag for your dive equipment and 1 small carry-on daypack. During the tour there are a lot of opportunities to wash your clothes, so please don't bring too much. As a general rule, if you can not lift your own luggage, then you have too much.

For the nights that you sleep in a tent you should bring your own sleeping bag, pillow and air mattress / sleeping mat. The tents and other camping equipment will be provided by Ocean Legends.

In terms of diving equipment we recommend bringing along a 5 to 7mm wetsuit, and if you're going on the tour to Cape Town, also a hoodie + 3mm gloves.

Special safari clothes are not necessary at all to enjoy a game drive. However, it is not recommended to wear bright colors as it may scare the animals off.

What about non-divers?

Due to the variety of adventure activities available, our tours are also perfectly suited for non-divers. There's lots to see and do with plenty of time to explore. At no time would you find yourself being bored!

For this tour it is advisable (but not required) to get vaccinated against DTP, hepatitis A, however prophylactics against malaria is highly recommended. Make an appointment with your doctor and mention if you will be diving, as not all malaria medication is suitable.

Do I need a visa?

Most nationalities don’t require a tourist visa for South Africa or Swaziland, and are allowed to remain for up to 90 days without a visa. For Mozambique we ask you to obtain a visa before departure, as obtaining a visa at the border itself will be a very timely process and this would cause major delays.

To check if you require a visa, visit CIBT Visas (Nordic nationalities can check visum.com). If you don’t have time to go to the relevant embassies, CIBT Visas can also assist you in obtaining your visas, they do charge a broker fee for this.

Otherwise you can contact your nearest embassy to apply for a tourist visa: www.embassy.goabroad.com/embassies-of/mozambique

Important: All necessary travel documents are your responsibility to be obtained before departure and to be in your possession during the tour. Please apply for the necessary visas at least 4 weeks before departure. You need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after departure from Southern Africa, with a minimum of 3 empty visa pages.

If you have any questions, please contact us. We’re happy to help!
